Objectives

Objectives of KIDEM can be listed as follows:

(1) To collect information about cancer cases occured in Izmir by using all kinds of data sources,

(2) To calculate incidence rates of different cancers in Izmir,

(3) By evaluating incidence rates lower or higher then expected, to make estimations to reveal new researches about specific cancer causes for the region,

(4) To create a data-base for scientific researches,

(5) To assemble reference evidences for projects to control cancer.

Organization and Activities

Organization

Izmir Cancer Registry is a center working as a subdivision of Provincial Health Directorate of Izmir; it collaborates with Cancer Division of Ministry of Health.

Sultan Yalçın Eser, MD, PhD is responsible from the performances of activities, in behalf of Provincial Health Director.

The administrative units of KIDEM and their duties can be listed as follows:

(1) Central office:

It coordinates the activities of the whole allied units, organizes and direct the educational programmes. Quality control of the all data collected, to enter the data to computer, control of duplications, evaluation of data, preparing the documents for presentations are among the duties of this office.

Central office is located in five rooms of the additional building of Izmir provincial health directorate in "Karsiyaka ". The team of the office is composed of four physician (Dr. Sultan Yalcın Eser, Dr Cankut Yakut, Dr. Saniye Ozalan, Dr. Tunay Nazlı), five cancer registars (Gulcan Gul, Tulay Coskun, Hacer Ari) and four civil officers (Huriye Karaz, Tülay Yüksel, Hülya Elibol, Şenay Keskin).

(2) Cancer Registry Units:

Cancer registrars trained for this purpose and certified are working at "cancer registry units" located in the big hospitals of Izmir; most of them are graduated nurses. At those units, informations about cancer cases are being collected by using a questionary prepared for KIDEM and according to needs and conditions of Turkey. That form is being changed occasionally in accordance with the experience and problems occured.

Single cancer registrars are working at some of the hospitals without cancer registry units, and registrars are collecting data by at-site visits from the rest of the hospitals. About thirty cancer registrars are linked with KIDEM.

(3) Advisory Committee

From each hospital with cancer registry units, a physician concerning with cancer cases is assigned as member of advisory committee. Members represents also different specialities. Committee joins quarterly and makes decisions for principal scientific rules about collecting and using data. Also committee directs the activities of KIDEM.

(4) Scientific Committees

They are specific ad hoc groups.

Activities

Organizing and participating to training courses for cancer registrars,

Organizing and performing in-service training programmes for cancer registrars

Participating to developing process of computer programme for cancer registries (CanReg),

Participating to scientific meetings.

Scientific relationship with international institutions, especially WHO/IARC (Lyon). KIDEM is a member of ENCR (=European Network of Cancer Registries).

Methodology:

Collecting and Evaluating Data

Steps in collecting and evaluating data:

A. Transferring data to central office.

Main data resources:

(1) Hospital cancer registry units

(2) Visits to hospitals without registry units,

(3) Death certificates from "provincial health directorate",

(4) Datas from private pathology laboratories.

B. Control of accordancy of data on each query ("internal control"), e.g. "male uterus cancer" or "female prostate cancer".

C. Adding data to database in computer by using CanReg.

D. Control of the forms for duplications ("external control")

E. Presenting data in tables.

F. Evaluating data according to population figures and calculating rates.
